About It’s my egg

Heather Hunt and writer Kennedy Warne collaborated to develop “It’s my egg (and you can’t have it!)”.

The story was directly inspired by motion sensor footage Heather Hunt has seen in her role publicising the Backyard Kiwi project. Heather was horrified to see what a magnet kiwi nests are to all sorts of mammalian pests and predators.

“It’s my egg” is a true kiwi action-thriller story, it’s a story about devoted dads and dangerous enemies. The devoted dads are kiwi fathers who take on the responsibility of looking after their eggs until they hatch. The dangerous enemies are all the predators that have their eye on the eggs or the kiwi dads that are caring for them. Who will win in this struggle? The odds are stacked in favour of the predators. But as Heather Hunt and Kennedy Warne show in “It’s my egg and (you can’t have it!)”, the outcome isn’t a certainty—especially if people lend a helping hand. Human kiwi can make all the difference to the survival of forest kiwi. And that’s an inspiring story.

“It’s my egg” received a Storylines Notable Book Award in April 2018
