Information for visitors

The Whangarei Heads is a special place with renowned beaches, wonderful hiking, a couple of ‘mountains’, great bush, and some rare, special and unique wildlife.

Visiting in the winter can be especially rewarding. The water isn’t as warm, but the kiwi can be heard almost every night throughout the early months of winter, before they start nesting.

If you’re a visitor to Whangarei Heads, or if you have friends or relatives who come and visit, make sure they are aware that there are kiwi throughout the area. Dogs of all shapes and sizes should be kept on a leash and not allowed to roam at any time.

Watch out when driving at night you might be lucky enough to see wild kiwi on the road.
